Habitat for Humanity International was established in Americus, Georgia by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1973, not by Jimmy Carter as some believe.

President Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter are long time supporters and partners with Habitat for Humanity.  Their efforts have resulted in the construction of over 2,000 affordable homes being built.  Yet we cannot downplay the exposure given to Habitat due to their involvement.

Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization with autonomous, (independent) affiliates that serve communities all around the globe.  Both International and affiliates are controlled by a board of directors with elected officers.

Habitat International receives feedback from a board made up of people from local affiliates and the local affiliates receive feedback for the community it serves.

The History of Hawkins Habitat for Humanity

Hawkins Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of HfHI began February 17, 1992.

At that time, concerned citizens and business leaders in Hawkins County, including Jeff Campbell, Maurice DeWitte, Don Freeman, David Hale, Karen Halstead, Marge Lockhart, Doc McConnell, Steven Nelson, Ann Newton,

Jim Point, Eileen Queenor, and Rick Witowski agreed on this position of faith; "That all of God's people should have a decent affordable place in which to live."

Habitat for Humanity is not an "arm of the government."

While we do compete for government grants to build affordable housing for low-income people, we largely depend on  the community for support and funding.

This means that we accept donations from individuals, organizations, churches, businesses, etc.

HHfH does not discriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, familial, or martial status or whether or not a person receives public assistance.
